The story takes place in 19th century America during the height of the Second Industrial Revolution. The two most well-known electricity entrepreneurs at the time were Thomas Edison (played by Benedict Cumberbatch) and George Westinghouse (played by Michael Shannon), who viewed each other as deadly rivals, evenly matched and at odds. Edison is the inventor of direct current; he is arrogant, proud, and ambitious, making many enemies. One day, a man named Tesla (played by Nicholas Hoult) invents alternating current, which is different from Edison’s. In order to seize the market, Westinghouse quickly extends an olive branch to Tesla, inviting him to work for him. The emergence of alternating current reshapes people's understanding of electricity and significantly advances the revolution.
