Ron (played by Tom Cruise) has been a competitive boy since childhood, yearning for a man's life. Young Ron is thoroughly captivated by President Nixon's inflammatory speech about the Vietnam War, and a feeling of challenge and a desire to sacrifice for his country gradually grows within him. After losing a wrestling match, the always competitive Ron resolutely bids farewell to his girlfriend Donna and university life, embarking on a journey to join the military. However, upon arriving in Vietnam, Ron does not find the heroic spirit he has longed for; instead, he witnesses a series of inhumane tragedies. Ron's friend Wilson is killed by Ron's bullet during a chaotic battle, and soon after, Ron is paralyzed from a gunshot wound and sent back to America. Sitting in a wheelchair, Ron still clings to his belief in the war waged by America, but after reuniting with Donna, she heartbrokenly believes that Ron's tragedy is the fault of the war. Nightmares haunt Ron, and he visits the grave of his comrade Wilson; amidst the anti-war cries, Ron finally awakens.
