Tahimi is a minibus driver who goes into Manila every day to earn money by picking up passengers. He is very interested in anything American, whether it be movies, music, or his dream girl - Miss America. His favorite radio station is "Voice of America," and he is especially fascinated by the American space program. He idolizes the rocket scientist Werner Von Braun, who defected from East Germany, and even formed a WVB fan club in the village, recruiting some local kids as members and raising funds for the Philippine Miss pageant by selling ice pops. Tahimi believes that the village is gradually regressing and failing to keep up with the times. The villagers' backward lifestyles make him feel sorrowful, and he even looks down on friends he grew up with, as they now work as bamboo house craftsmen. Although building bamboo houses is a traditional Filipino craft, very few people are willing to learn it anymore. What Tahimi desires is a more spacious and brighter apartment and a more modern "international lifestyle." One day, he met an American businessman on the road who needed a personal driver, and so Tahimi went to Paris with him. Life in Paris initially felt refreshing, but as his only friend, a street vendor in Paris, eventually committed suicide after being oppressed by a nearby supermarket, Tahimi began to question this money-centric capitalist society. Why does the world prioritize supermarkets? Why do countless old buildings get demolished only to be replaced by more luxurious villas? He attempted to resist in his own way but soon realized it was futile and woke up from his dream, returning to his hometown.
