This film tells the same story as "Dangerous Liaisons," but was released later, overshadowed by the latter. In fact, the director Milos Forman is quite skilled, and the triangle of passion involving Colin Firth, Annette Bening, and Meg Tilly is performed competently. Coupled with the grandeur of the actual palace settings, this English-French co-produced period drama still holds considerable viewing value. The plot is set in the 18th-century French aristocracy, where Madame de Montreau, jealous of her lover Gercault's impending marriage to her cousin Cecile, schemes to have the notorious Vicomte seduce Cecile and take her virginity. Subsequently, Viconte is killed in a duel, and Cecile confirms she is pregnant with his child.
