The barber Lu Ping (played by Chen Kun) lives a simple life in Shanghai thanks to his excellent skills. After the Japanese army occupied Shanghai, an unforeseen accident forces him to leave his hometown, beginning a long period of turmoil in his life. After fleeing to an ancient town in Jiangnan, Lu Ping meets a beautiful Jiangnan woman, Song Jiayi (played by Zeng Li). They fall in love at first sight, but Jiayi is already engaged, and her father Song Fengnian wants to secure his daughter's future in those tumultuous times by marrying her to Nationalist officer Ye Jiangtian. Even after becoming a wife, Song Jiayi never stops loving Lu Ping, and throughout his tumultuous life, the only thing Lu Ping never lets go of, besides his craft, is this love.
