In the later stages of the Vietnam War, Captain Willard (played by Martin Sheen) is ordered to ascend the Mekong River to seek out Colonel Kurtz (played by Marlon Brando), who has established his own kingdom in Cambodia after deserting the U.S. military, and bring him back or kill him. Kurtz was once a hero in the Vietnam War with significant military accomplishments. However, one day, he mysteriously disappeared. Subsequently, intelligence indicates that he has built his own kingdom in Cambodia with his own army that opposes the U.S. military. Willard and a group of soldiers travel upriver, witnessing various atrocities and killings along the way, observing how both U.S. soldiers and locals have become mentally twisted and committed various abnormal acts due to the prolonged war, leaving Willard profoundly shaken. Eventually, Willard is captured by locals in Kurtz's kingdom in Cambodia and meets Kurtz. However, Kurtz unexpectedly desires to die and asks Willard to turn the place into rubble...
