The young and beautiful ballet dancer Matilda Kshesinskaya catches the attention of Crown Prince Nikolai with her calm attitude in the face of unexpected situations during a performance, along with her charming eyes and graceful dance moves. Also infatuated with Matilda are the royal cousin Duke Andrei and the jealous fanatic Vorontsov, who goes so far as to attack the Crown Prince. Although Nikolai is already engaged, he hopelessly falls in love. After the death of Tsar Alexander III, Nikolai must fulfill his engagement in order to be crowned king. Matilda is heartbroken upon learning of Nikolai's engagement and wishes only to perform at the ball before the coronation, but this wish is thwarted by the security chief, Vlasov, who is tasked with protecting the royal family. Unwilling to accept her fate, Matilda still rushes onto the stage. Her performance is not perfect, but it solidifies Nikolai's determination to be with her. Just as Matilda waits eagerly for Nikolai's arrival, the escaped Vorontsov suddenly appears and abducts her, while Vlasov viciously attempts to kill her. Believing his beloved to be lost, Nikolai, disheartened, decides to proceed with the coronation alongside the daughter of the Duke of Hesse, Alix. At this moment, the fortunate Matilda reappears, but it is too late; the lovers are unable to be united.
