An unsuccessful Japanese painter, Shimamura (played by Ikebe Ryo), travels across the country and passes through a place called Snow Country. At a local hot spring inn, he encounters a 19-year-old shamisen singer, Komako (played by Kishi Keiko). Komako is beautiful, pure, playful, and charming. Shimamura is drawn to the girl's innocence; although he harbors affection for her, he is reluctant to tarnish this precious gem. On the eve of leaving Snow Country to return to Tokyo, these two people, who admire each other but come from different backgrounds, finally break free from their constraints and come together. The following year, longing for Komako, Shimamura returns to Snow Country, where Komako, wanting to repay her shamisen teacher for raising her, willingly becomes a geisha to earn money for the teacher's son, Yoichi, who is sick. The young girl, Yoko (played by Yachigusa Kaoru), who takes care of Yoichi, is infatuated with him and resents Komako for her indecisiveness between the betrothed Yoichi and the patron Shimamura. This also stirs up turmoil in Shimamura’s heart. Their second meeting ends awkwardly, leaving the fate of their love uncertain... This film is adapted from the novella of the same name by Japanese author Yasunari Kawabata.
