CW•Briggs (played by Woody Allen) is the most outstanding insurance investigator at a renowned North Coast insurance company in New York City during the 1940s. His special skill is his ability to read what criminals are thinking, allowing him to solve cases with ease. This all changes when his boss brings in "efficiency expert" Betty. With her arrival, new management strategies are implemented, and Briggs becomes the first target of scrutiny. Tension between the two escalates. At a birthday party for his colleague George, they are called on stage by a magician and, under the spell of the Jade Scorpion, are hypnotized, waking up with no memory of what just transpired. Afterward, a series of jewelry thefts occur in the city, and the alarm system for the stolen jewels was set up by Briggs himself, making it impossible for the cases to be solved without him. During the investigation, Kensington's beautiful daughter (played by Charlize Theron) takes the initiative to ask him out, raising his suspicions about her motives.
