The story takes place in the 1930s, where a secret meeting of the Communist Party is ambushed by the Kuomintang, resulting in a large number of underground party members being arrested. The leader of the underground party, Wang Feng (played by Tony Leung), assigns an urgent mission because the important task "Ace" is among those arrested. The enemy also knows they have caught a big fish, but struggles to identify who the Ace really is. After investigation and research, they narrow down their suspects to five: Zhao Biwei (played by Lin Chi-ling), Su Jie (played by Gillian Chung), Wang Xiafen (played by Meng Tingyi), Teacher Shi (played by Su Jin), and Xiao Hong. To extract the so-called truth from these five, the enemy resorts to various cruel tortures in an attempt to break the Ace both physically and mentally. One lie hides another lie; who is the Ace?
