During the Vietnam War, three of the five friends from Clayton, USA, who often hunted deer together—Nick (played by Christopher Walken), Steven (played by John Savage), and Michael (played by Robert De Niro)—are preparing to head to the front lines. On the eve of their departure, Steven marries his girlfriend Angela, and the wedding serves as their farewell party. The three young men are captured by the North Vietnamese army on the battlefield, where they are cruelly forced to play a game of "Russian Roulette." Michael seizes the opportunity to take a soldier's gun. Although the three friends manage to escape, they become separated during their flight. Michael and Steven eventually return safely to America, but Steven is left permanently disabled and refuses to go home, not wanting to be a burden to his family. As the Vietnam War nears its end, Michael learns from Steven that he often receives anonymous remittances from Saigon, which he deduces must be from Nick. To find his dear friend, Michael decides to take the risk of venturing back into Vietnam.
