Anna, played by Isabelle Huppert, is part of a family of four fleeing the city to the countryside, only to find their village home occupied. In the ensuing conflict, her husband is killed, leaving Anna and her children displaced, during which their son is held by a homeless boy. They later arrive at a train station where many are waiting, hoping the train will take them to a promised land. Anna learns about a group of religious martyrs who dedicate themselves to saving humanity, and even her son is willing to be sacrificed. In extreme conditions, humanity does not necessarily surrender to savagery. Haneke's style possesses a harsh beauty that seeks to eliminate sentimentalism and discovers hope in human indifference.
