In the 1950s, a young boy named Ingmar (played by Anton Glanzelius) lives in a quiet Swedish town with his sickly mother (Anki Lidén), his bully of a brother, and his beloved puppy. His father has left home, and his mother is plagued by illness. The two boys can't get along and often fight fiercely at home. Unable to bear the disturbance, their mother decides to send them to live with relatives separately. Like the puppy being kicked out of the house, Ingmar discovers a broader sky… This film won the Best European Film at the 1987 Danish Film Critics Awards, Best Foreign Language Film at the 1988 Boston Society of Film Critics Awards, Best Foreign Language Film at the 1988 Golden Globe Awards, Best Film at the 1987 Seattle International Film Festival, and Best Actor (Anton Glanzelius) and Best Film at the 1986 Swedish Film Awards.
