The U.S. presidential election has entered a critical stage, with both candidates having nearly equal support in the previous voting. With just a week to go before the Ohio primary, both see the state as a decisive battleground and begin a rivalry, both overt and covert. One of the candidates, Morris (George Clooney), has his second-in-command, Stephen (Ryan Gosling), a capable young man, who is approached by Tom Duffy (Paul Giamatti), the head of the opposing candidate’s campaign, to switch sides. However, Stephen remains loyal to Morris and is not swayed. On the other hand, Stephen is deeply attracted to a new intern, Molly (Evan Rachel Wood), and the two quickly become involved. Unexpectedly, journalist Ida (Marisa Tomei) from The Times learns of a meeting between Stephen and Tom and uses this information to coerce Stephen into revealing insider details about the election.
