The story takes place in late 19th century Sichuan, where Zheng Mogu (played by Xu Qing), born in a rural area, marries Cai Xingshun, the owner of a grocery store, becoming the grocery store's mistress. Cai Xingshun is honest but dull, lacking any romantic understanding, while Zheng Mogu possesses a stunning appearance, immediately attracting gossip upon entering the marriage. Fortunately, Cai Xingshun has a highly respected cousin, Luo Desheng (played by You Yong), who always steps in to protect Zheng Mogu whenever someone attempts to bully her. As time passes, an inappropriate feeling develops between Zheng Mogu and Luo Desheng.
