Critic Alexander (played by Erland Josephson) celebrates his fiftieth birthday at his home in Sweden while his young son, who has just undergone throat surgery, is unable to speak. The two plant a sapling in silence, hoping it will grow green leaves. However, that same evening, the radio announces the launch of nuclear missiles, signaling the imminent outbreak of World War III. Desperate, Alexander prays to God for war to be averted, even offering to give up everything to prevent the apocalypse. In a state of exhaustion, he burns down his house in expectation of the world being reborn. Amidst the raging flames, Alexander is taken to the hospital by an ambulance. His young son continues to water the sapling they planted together at the riverbank, and everything seems to return to calm. The last masterpiece directed by the renowned Soviet filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky, "Sacrifice" won four awards, including the Catholic Humanitarian Spirit Award at the 1986 Cannes Film Festival, and was nominated for the Palme d'Or for Best Film. In 1988, it won the Best Foreign Film at the 41st British Academy Film Awards.
