The story takes place on May 6, 1938, an extraordinary day for both the people of Rome and an ordinary housewife, Antonieta (played by Sophia Loren). On this day, dictators Hitler and Mussolini arrived in Rome for a summit, extolling the fascism they practiced, and amidst the stirring words of impassioned speeches, the entire city was swept up in a frenzied commotion. However, all this fervor seemed unrelated to Antonieta, who was busy tidying up at home, trapped in a deep melancholy and unable to escape her dull marriage and pale life. At this moment, she encounters her new neighbor, Gabriele (played by Marcello Mastroianni), and in a very short time, they fall in love, igniting immense passion, but after the night passes, everything returns to calm as if nothing had ever happened.
