The story takes place just after World War II, as Germany has fallen in the war, and most of the German soldiers have become prisoners of war sent to camps. In a POW camp located near Leningrad, a new batch of German prisoners has arrived, watched over by a group of striking Russian women, whose direct superior is General Pavlov (played by John Malkovich). Natalia (played by Vera Farmiga) is a military doctor whose husband has gone mad from the trauma of war. To protect her husband, Natalia has no choice but to agree to General Pavlov's request to come to the POW camp and try to uncover the hidden SS war criminals among the captives. In this grim and terrifying camp, both the guards and the prisoners are deeply scarred by the trauma of war, and as time goes by, the positions and relationships of both sides begin to subtly change.
