An English pianist, who never performs in public, lives in an old large house. The owner leads a reclusive life, only accompanied by music. She comes from Africa; her husband was arrested for political reasons, and she does not know how she ended up in Rome, becoming the strange pianist's tenant and housekeeper, working to earn money for medical school. Her music is rhythm-filled, and she is very much alive, struggling for survival. The eccentric pianist living upstairs becomes infatuated with the African woman downstairs in his peculiar way. One day, he suddenly grabs her and says he loves her. She remains indifferent to him and replies that she is married, her husband is in prison in Africa, "Help me get my husband out!" she says. He apologizes and never brings it up again. However, slowly, she notices that the artworks in the old house are mysteriously disappearing one by one, and eventually, even the piano is taken away. At this moment, she receives a message from her husband that he is coming. She knows this is the result of the pianist selling off his possessions as a bribe. And what about her choice?
