Joy (Jane Adams), Helen (Lara Flynn Boyle), and Tracy (Cynthia Stevenson) are three sisters who are as close as can be, having grown up together and shared a carefree childhood. As they grow older, the three sisters enter a complex and chaotic society, facing emotional challenges that every woman must confront. Joy's relationship with her boyfriend is filled with complications. Tracy marries psychologist Bill (Dylan Baker), only to discover that the seemingly charming man harbors a dirty and ugly secret. Allen (Philip Seymour Hoffman) is Bill's patient who, by chance, encounters the alluring Helen and falls deeply in love. Meanwhile, the sisters' parents suddenly announce the end of their forty-year marriage.
