In early 1990s Poland, on the brink of a new future following the collapse of the communist regime, four women spanning several decades are about to face dramatic changes in their lives. A housewife trapped in a boring marriage unexpectedly falls in love with a priest; a meticulous and capable elementary school principal suffers in an affair; a young and beautiful dance instructor refuses to continue wilting in a long-distance relationship; a literature teacher in her fifties, who dedicated her life to education, suddenly loses her job. Their challenges are diverse, yet their fates are tightly intertwined. This film inherits the legacy of Polish cinematic masters such as Andrzej Wajda and Krzysztof Kieślowski, boasting a visual style that is both exquisite and intense, similar to "Ida." Young director Tomasz Wasilewski skillfully captures restrained shots and a cold color palette, perfectly blending the tragic lives of the four women, continuing the excellent qualities of Polish cinema, integrating historical remnants, social upheaval, and religious reflection, which are reflected in the dramatically rich personal stories. It won the Silver Bear for Best Screenplay at the 66th Berlin International Film Festival in 2016.
