On a rainy night in 1946, novelist Maurice Bendrix (Ralph Fiennes) encounters his old friend, diplomat Henry Miles (Stephen Rea). From Henry, Maurice learns that his wife Sarah (Julianne Moore) appears to be having an affair, which ignites his jealousy. Two years prior, Maurice had a clandestine relationship with Sarah, often sharing intimate moments behind Henry's back. However, after a major bombing, Sarah abruptly left him. Haunted by the past, Maurice accepts Henry's request to help investigate Sarah’s whereabouts, but the outcome leaves him deeply unsettled and reflective… This film is based on Graham Greene's 1951 autobiographical novel of mysterious romanticism and won the 2000 BAFTA Award for Best Adapted Screenplay.
