This film is a biographical movie about the tumultuous life of former East German singer Gerhard Gundermann. During the day, Gundermann drives an excavator in an open-pit coal mine, but at night he takes the stage as a singer, inspiring others with his own music. His works address themes of life and death, while also touching on political and social critique. With his highly personal and authentic pieces that are both melancholic and poetic, he became a popular icon in East Germany during the 1980s, though he often faced conflicts with his superiors. Even after the reunification of Germany, Gundermann's popularity remained undiminished. However, in 1995, his past collaboration with the East German Stasi as a spy was revealed, which, while seemingly not affecting his music career, led him into a prolonged personal struggle. The film won six German Film Awards in 2019, including Best Film, Director, and Male Lead, along with three nominations.
