Queen Victoria (Judi Dench) has long lost track of how long she has been on the throne; the days before her coronation feel like memories from a past life. The ritual-laden life in the palace leaves Queen Victoria feeling exhausted, and the upcoming celebration of her Golden Jubilee only compounds her sense of suffocation. During the celebration, Queen Victoria unexpectedly meets a servant named Abdul (Ali Fazal), a vibrant young man who brings a sense of renewal to the Queen. Abdul, an ordinary office worker, has traveled from India to England specifically to attend the celebration. His presence makes the Queen realize that outside her court, there exists a rich and colorful new world she never imagined.
