In 1948, on the eve of Chongqing's liberation, the Kuomintang, aware that their days were numbered, began a frenzied massacre of Communists and progressive individuals. Jiang Jie (played by Yu Lan), after her husband was killed, composed herself and went to the Huaying Mountains to participate in the rural armed revolution. Due to betrayal by the traitor Fu Zhigao, she and the leader of the Chongqing underground party, Xu Yunfeng (played by Zhao Dan), were captured and imprisoned in the Zhazi Cave concentration camp. The Kuomintang subjected Xu Yunfeng and Jiang Jie to threats, temptations, and severe torture, attempting to extract information about the underground party, but to no avail. While their bodies were being tortured, Xu Yunfeng and Jiang Jie became even more courageous in spirit; they led their fellow inmates, including Xiao Luobo (played by Fang Shu), in one struggle after another against the Kuomintang. In April 1949, as the People's Liberation Army crossed the Yangtze River and the liberation of Chongqing was imminent, Xu Yunfeng, Jiang Jie, and others established contact with the outside party organization through Hua Ziliang, the Huaying Mountain district party secretary, who had feigned madness for over ten years in the concentration camp, and began to plan an escape.
