The film is set in the 1930s under Stalin's rule in the former Soviet Union. Kotov (played by Nikita Mikhalkov) is a brilliant leader of the Red Army, with a prosperous background and a happy family, enjoying blissful moments in a villa with his wife Marusya (played by Ingeborga Dapkunaite) and daughter. Unexpectedly, an uninvited guest intrudes. As he unveils layers of disguise, people recognize him—a decayed nobleman Midian (played by Oleg Menshikov) who has been missing for ten years. Midian's arrival is like a messenger from hell; with the stories he shares, the entangled grievances between him and Kotov, the old flame with Marusya, and the distorted lives shaped by the times unfold in the story. More cruelly, he brings news that plunges the Kotov family into despair...
