George (Richard Burton) is a history professor, and his wife Martha (Elizabeth Taylor) is the daughter of the president of the university. After years of marriage, their relationship has faded. Moreover, the inequality in their social status has buried heavy risks in their marriage. One night, after returning home from a party, the exhausted George learns that Elizabeth has invited a young couple, Nick (George Segal) and Honey (Sandy Dennis), over without informing him. Despite his dissatisfaction, George habitually suppresses his feelings. The young and handsome Nick catches Martha's attention, and seeing his wife fawning over Nick leaves George feeling uneasy—a storm is brewing.
