This film tells the coming-of-age story of Gunlala (played by Wang Jishua), the only gun-carrying boy of the Miao tribe in China. In the southwestern Miao tribe of our country, there are many ethnic customs passed down through generations, such as boys needing to perform a coming-of-age ceremony, at which point they will receive a hunting gun from their father as a sign of growing up. Gunlala has been living with his grandmother (played by Shi Mingma) since childhood and has never seen his father. He has asked his grandmother more than once where his father is, but each time he is given vague answers. Now, having turned fifteen, his struggling family cannot afford the 500 yuan needed for the gun, so he sets off alone to find his father. Along the way, he meets his friend Jiaguang (played by Gungdangyuan), with whom he has shared hardships, but unexpectedly, Jiaguang meets with disaster the next day, and Gunlala personally sends his friend to the afterlife. His grandmother uses all the silver jewelry she saved up over her life to buy him a gun, which was supposed to be a gift from his father, and only then does he realize that he is just an abandoned child...
