They are an average of 81 years old, but in their hearts live the dreams of 18-year-olds. They can tell you with a lifetime of experience: as long as you have dreams, miracles can happen! Among the 17 elderly participants, two have suffered from cancer, four need hearing aids, five have high blood pressure, eight have heart diseases, and each one has issues with joint degeneration. However, they dream of conquering Taiwan, wanting to feel once more the land they have cohabitated with for a lifetime, during their autumn years in their eighties. The moment they decided to ride their bicycles around the island, the real challenge began: they faced family opposition, the difficulties of taking tests at an advanced age, aging bodily functions, as well as the severe tests of wind, rain, and landslides along the 1139-kilometer journey. The day before departure, the team leader even had a recurrence of gastric ulcers, with hemoglobin levels continuously decreasing… How would he lead the ageless knights to complete their dream journey? "The Ageless Knights - 2008 Preview Edition" News Information: One day when you turn eighty, how much courage do you still have to dream? The ageless knights say, let's go, we will ride around Taiwan. To promote active aging, encourage the elderly to pursue their dreams, and recreate the value of life, from November 13 to 25, 2007, the Hongdao Elderly Welfare Foundation hosted the "Challenge Eighty, Exceed One Thousand Miles - The Ageless Knights' Diary of Riding Around Taiwan" event. Under the rallying cry of team leader Lai Ching-Yen, “Being old doesn’t mean being useless. Don’t let the young look down on us old folks!” 17 ageless knights with an average age of 81 decided to achieve the groundbreaking ride around Taiwan, embodying the unprecedented spirit of agelessness. The foundation also filmed a documentary during the event, entrusted to the Spinning Shepherd Multimedia Studio, and before the full-length feature officially met the audience, they completed the “Ageless Knights - 2008 Preview Edition” documentary short last fall and held multiple premieres. In this documentary short, the lively interactions and dialogues of the ageless knights subverted the general public’s impression of the elderly, bringing continuous laughter to the premiere. Heartfelt and inspiring true stories moved the audience, earning the film a one million yuan grant from the Bureau of News for its short film support. Director Hua Tian-Hao stated, “Since understanding more, I rarely chatted with my grandpa, and I never thought I would shoot a documentary related to the elderly. This six-month filming experience with the ageless knights, their innocent and lovely sides, warmth, rich life experiences, and persistence in realizing dreams all left a deep impression on me. I’m honored at 27 to be able to make a genuine touching story about an 81-year-old.” To bring inspiration and dreams to more people, from September to December last year, the Hongdao Elderly Welfare Foundation and the ageless knights took this “Ageless Knights - 2008 Preview Edition” documentary short on a nationwide premiere tour, receiving over a hundred enthusiastic invitations for sharing sessions, hoping to encourage the idea that people of any age have the right and ability to dream and realize those dreams.
