Lena (Natalie Portman) is a biologist. A year ago, her husband Kane (Oscar Isaac) mysteriously disappeared after participating in a secret mission, and Lena has been living in sorrow since then. One day, an amnesiac Kane suddenly appears in front of Lena, then collapses and is taken to the hospital. There, Lena meets Dr. Ventress (Jennifer Jason Leigh). Dr. Ventress tells Lena that Kane was sent to an unknown area shrouded in a "shimmer." Over the past three years, countless teams have been sent in for exploration, but only Kane has returned alive. Furthermore, the "shimmer" is constantly expanding. To uncover the truth, Lena voluntarily joins the next team being dispatched, along with Dr. Ventress, Anya (Gina Rodriguez), and Josie (Tessa Thompson).
