Alice (played by Heather Graham) and Klaus (played by Ulrich Thomsen) have a marriage that exists only in name. By chance, she encounters the rough-edged man Adam (played by Joseph Fiennes), and the two quickly fall in love, entangled in a web of sexual satisfaction and emotional dependence that she cannot escape. Therefore, Alice finally confronts her husband, and a furious Klaus, who had been kept in the dark, reacts violently, leading to their divorce. Later, Alice learns from a friend that Klaus has been unable to let her go, and she feels a flicker of regret. However, she discovers that her ex-husband is living with her friend, which fills her with rage. Alice agrees to Adam's proposal, but she still harbors concerns about his temper. Fortunately, her sister Deborah (played by Natascha McElhone) helps to soothe her, and Alice gradually finds calm.
