Won the Luigi De Laurentiis Award at the 1996 Venice Film Festival Won the New Director Award at the 1997 Seattle International Film Festival Introduction: This seemingly simple film with a documentary style depicts the personal journey of the Palestinian filmmaker Elia Suleiman in search of his roots. The film is divided into two parts. The first part captures the absurd and silent Arab neighborhoods in the ancient city of Nazareth. The second part observes the city from a relatively politicized perspective, where Elia Suleiman plays a more active role. He returns to his birthplace looking for inspiration, but what he sees are grim images of the Arab people trapped in a cultural identity crisis. A particularly notable example: an Arab girl who wishes to achieve a more independent status in her town, but is unable to do so due to the prejudices of residents living in Jewish neighborhoods.
