In a small town in the Czech Republic, the annual firemen's ball is here once again. This year's event has a special agenda as the elderly chief (Jan Vostrcil) who is suffering from cancer is about to celebrate his 86th birthday. The old comrades from the fire brigade decide to throw a grand party for the chief and present him with a golden axe to honor his lifelong contributions. The program is packed with content: raffles, awards, a banquet, dancing, and even a beauty pageant. However, things don’t go as planned, with gifts constantly being stolen and young women unwilling to participate in the pageant. Amid the chaos, a large fire breaks out to add to the excitement... This film is the last work of director Miloš Forman before he left Czechoslovakia.
