The daughter of Emperor Dezong of Tang, Princess Shengping (played by Ji Ping), marries Guo Ai (played by Guo Fengying), the sixth son of the current great general Guo Ziyi. According to palace customs, the prince consort can only enter the palace after the red lanterns are hung high. Guo Ai is unhappy with this regulation but cannot change it. On Guo Ziyi's birthday, Princess Shengping does not go to celebrate, which leads to mockery and ridicule from Guo Ai's siblings, claiming he is henpecked. Guo Ai feels both guilty and angry and ends up hitting the princess upon returning to the palace. The princess runs into the royal palace to cry about her grievances, hoping that Emperor Dezong and the Empress Dowager will seek justice for her. After investigation, Emperor Dezong and the Empress Dowager learn the truth and find that the princess is indeed at fault for her absence in celebrating her father's birthday. Emperor Dezong reprimands the princess and plans to behead the prince consort to vent her frustration. However, the princess is frightened and flustered by this shocking decision. Yet, Emperor Dezong informs her that it is merely a hypothetical scenario.
Upon learning that Guo Ai hit the princess, Guo Ziyi immediately summons Guo Ai to the court to make amends. Considering Guo Ziyi's advanced age and significant contributions, which should not be jeopardized by a conflict between children, Emperor Dezong forgives Guo Ai's mistake and promotes him to show his importance. Following that, Emperor Dezong brings Guo Ai back to the harem, ordering the princess not to take advantage of her status and requiring her to immediately pay her respects to her father for forgiveness. He also orders the cancellation of the red lanterns at the palace gates and the regulations regarding royal gifts, and together with Empress Shen, encourages the young couple to reconcile. Ultimately, the misunderstanding between Guo Ai and the princess is resolved.
