"Hai Qian New Road" is a 2017 Malaysian film, written and directed by Soo Chong Hing, and is a semi-autobiographical movie about his family. The film is set in Penang in the 1970s (a prosperous island in northern Malaysia with a predominantly Chinese population) and is the first Malaysian film to be entirely in Penang Hokkien. The title "Hai Qian New Road" is what locals call Victoria Street in George Town (the center of Penang), in Hokkien it is Hai Kin Xin Lor.
After many years away from his hometown of Penang, Sunny (played by Li Ming Zhong) finally returns during the Lunar New Year to see his sister Ah Yun (played by Yang Yan Yan), two aunts, and old classmates. As a director, Sunny has always been a source of pride for his family, believed to be successful and leading a fulfilling life.
However, Sunny harbors untold struggles that he cannot share with others, caught between reality and ideals, and now he has depleted his funds to start filming a movie that is very important to him. The film tells stories from Sunny's childhood and family, including a secret incident/tragedy that casts a long shadow over Sunny to this day, his inability to understand his mother, and his deep resentment towards his mentally ill brother.
Faced with dwindling funds, external scrutiny, and the pressure of revealing his inner shadow and family scars, Sunny manages to persevere through a mission-like calling in his heart. This film is a tribute to his mother's many sacrifices for the family and represents a journey of redemption that must be completed...
