South African leader Nelson Mandela recited her poem "The Child Who Died" during his first speech to the South African parliament, praising her as South Africa's greatest poet. Oscar-winning director Paula van der Oest's latest work depicts the legendary life of South African poet Ingrid Jonker, who fought against the regime during the apartheid era, showcasing her tumultuous relationships with her lover (played by Neen Connor) and her father (played by Rutger Hauer). Ingrid Jonker is a renowned South African poet whose childhood was fraught with hardship, yet she possessed an extraordinary talent for writing poetry. Due to her husband’s position in the old South African government, their marriage fell apart over differing views on apartheid, leading to her depression and eventual suicide by drowning at the age of 32. After Ingrid Jonker's death, she left behind a 7-year-old daughter and many touching works, the most famous being the poetry collection "Black Butterfly Dance." In 1994, when South African President Mandela was released from prison, he recited a moving poem by Ingrid Jonker at his highly publicized inauguration ceremony, ultimately bringing her fame worldwide 30 years after her death…
