“The night gave me black eyes, but I used them to search for light.” In 1993, poet Gu Cheng bid a tragic farewell to the world on the island of Tuhua in New Zealand, along with his wife Xie Ye. For over 20 years, controversies, rumors, evaluations, and speculations regarding Gu Cheng have never ceased. In 2014, following the death of his lover Li Ying, we attempted to restore a real Gu Cheng from a "human" perspective, a man once worshiped like a religious figure by poetry enthusiasts, reflecting on the poetry that "awoke the Eastern sleeping lion" after the Cultural Revolution, as well as what Chinese intellectuals have referred to as the "most intellectually free era after the founding of the nation" during the 1980s. The glory and exile of that generation, as well as their divergent paths, are a microcosm of a nation's and an era's changes. Stranded in a foreign land, the difficulty of returning to his hometown became a monumental dilemma for Gu Cheng before his passing. As poet Yang Lian stated, "The tragedy of Gu Cheng is not only a personal tragedy but also a historical tragedy."
