Doctor Liu Wen (played by Tony Leung) appears to be a cynical person, but he is actually very delicate and insightful about the world. He despises the unjust medical system and decides to run a clinic in the red-light district. Passionate about medicine, he possesses excellent medical skills and bedside manners, especially when dealing with the impoverished masses. Among his patients are brave police officers (played by Sean Lau) and other marginalized individuals. Besides treating their physical ailments, he enjoys listening to the voices of these grassroots people and becomes their friend. However, he is betrayed by an old friend, and Liu Wen faces the crisis of having his medical license revoked.
