In the solemn and majestic courtroom, the nearly murdered Chief Justice Raghunath (played by Prithviraj Kapoor) speaks with righteous indignation and a facade of moral superiority. On the defendant's seat, the despondent young man Raju (played by Raj Kapoor) is helpless and resigned to fate. Raju grew up in poverty and was later lured by Raghunath's enemies into a life of theft and robbery. According to this Chief Justice, he is nothing but a born criminal and degenerate. The beautiful Leela (played by Nargis), a childhood friend of Raju and a law student under Raghunath, bravely takes on the role of Raju's defense lawyer. Under her relentless questioning, Raghunath is forced to recount the incident from 24 years ago when he expelled his wife from their home. Surprisingly, this seemingly unrelated testimony has deep roots concerning the case at hand...
