A major earthquake causes a volcano deep within Los Angeles to erupt and flow toward residential areas, resulting in the death of workers repairing underground pipelines. Geologist Amy and her friends personally experience the loss of a friend to a lava explosion while surveying a tunnel. Suddenly, a corner of the city is filled with erupting lava. The crisis management center's commander, Mike (played by Tommy Lee Jones), begins evacuating the crowds based on Dr. Amy's suggestion. They first use millions of tons of aerial rainfall to turn the approaching lava into obstacles, blocking its flow. Just when everyone thinks they can breathe easier, Dr. Amy believes that the lava hasn't really been stopped, but has only changed direction and is now rushing toward a hospital filled with injured. They have only 30 minutes to address the problem. Will they succeed?
