Adapted from the novel of the same name by Yu Hua. Rich gambler Fugui (Ge You) is addicted to gambling. His wife Jiazhen (Gong Li) repeatedly advises him to change, but to no avail. She eventually leaves him with their daughter Fengxia. That night, Fugui loses all his family fortune and dies of anger after his father discovers the truth. He is forced to sell his mother's jewelry and live in a decrepit house. A year later, Jiazhen returns home with their newborn son Youqing and Fengxia in tow, and Fugui sincerely repents, starting a modest life through shadow puppetry. However, good times do not last. During the civil war, Fugui is captured by the Kuomintang and becomes a laborer. After many twists and turns, he returns home to reunite with his family, but Fengxia becomes mute due to illness. Throughout the later Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution, despite gaining some small blessings, adversity continues to follow him like a shadow.
