Henri (Jean Gabin) runs a nightclub featuring some vulgar and flashy performances, with Laura (María Félix), a belly dancer, as the star attraction. The poor economy and Henri's mismanagement quickly bring the nightclub to the brink of bankruptcy. At this critical moment, Henri meets an ordinary laundress, Nini (Françoise Arnoul), and sees a remarkable talent in her, leading to the creation of the unprecedented dance form known as the "Can-Can." With the Can-Can, Henri's nightclub thrives once again, but the long-standing rivalry between Laura and Nini erupts on the opening day. Subsequently, a prince falls in love with Nini and plans to invest in the nightclub, but the envious Laura sabotages the deal.
