The film is based on the novel of the same name by Russian-French Jewish author Irène Némirovsky and tells a love story set in Nazi-occupied France during World War II. A German officer, played by Matthias Schoenaerts, moves into a house in the French countryside and develops a relationship with the mistress of the house, portrayed by Michelle Williams. However, their love faces obstacles from the war and opposition from their families.
