Pan Laowu, Shi Gu, and Zhao Liang are three ordinary log floating workers. During ten years of turmoil, they drift on the Xiao River, carrying the scars of devastation. Worries, frustrations, and injustices entangle them, leaving them unable to free themselves, so they can only bicker out of boredom, vent their emotions by fighting, and drown their sorrows in alcohol. At night, when the wooden raft docks in the wilderness, Shi Gu goes ashore to find his fiancée, Gai Xiu, who was forced into marriage by the District Revolutionary Committee Director Li Jiadong. He encounters the old district head Chen Minghe, who is on supervised labor and near death. Pan Laowu, who comes to find Shi Gu, resolutely decides to transfer the old district head to a safe place. Although Gai Xiu was forced into marriage, she has been resistant. Upon hearing the news, she escapes and waits by the river for the raft to reunite with Shi Gu. After Gai Xiu boards the raft, the timid Zhao Liang worries that Li Jiadong will investigate, and Pan Laowu, being valiant, agrees to shoulder all the consequences, allowing Gai Xiu to stay on the raft and drift with them. The encounters of the young couple, Shi Gu and Gai Xiu, inevitably remind Pan Laowu of his own youthful romance tragedy: over thirty years ago, he had a sweet love affair with the innocent girl Wu Aihua. However, after their raft broke apart, he took on a debt that burdened him, and not wanting to let Wu Aihua suffer with him, he chose to separate. His love for Wu Aihua became a happy yet painful memory, forever etched in Pan Laowu's heart. When the raft drifts to Shuanghe Street, Pan Laowu, in a desperate attempt to save the dying District Head Xu, needs to buy ginseng, but finds he lacks enough money. Zhao Liang, usually very stingy, unexpectedly shows generosity and takes out the money he had set aside for his daughter's dowry. At a noodle shop, Pan Laowu unexpectedly encounters Wu Aihua, who has become a beggar over the years! The vicissitudes of life have created an invisible barrier between them, making them feel estranged and indifferent. Yet, their past love and today's suffering act like an invisible chain tying their hearts together. Wu Aihua recounts her unfortunate fate, while Pan Laowu explains the reason for his departure all those years ago, invoking Wu Aihua's belief in life with his sincere warmth and strength. Wu Aihua accepts Pan Laowu's commission to deliver ginseng to District Head Xu, but the ginseng is seized by Li Jiadong's gang. Pan Laowu risks his life to reclaim the ginseng. The heavy rain pours down, and a mountain flood erupts, causing the raft to rush violently in the torrents. Pan Laowu spots a floating log in the flood; he pushes his companions off the raft to escape and drives the raft forward. In the morning, Shi Gu, Gai Xiu, and Zhao Liang search along the riverbank, calling out for Pan Laowu.
