Waris (Liya Kebede) was born in the desert of Somalia and lived a nomadic life with her mother. At the age of three, Waris underwent female circumcision according to Somali customs. When she was twelve, her father intended to marry her off to a sixty-year-old man in exchange for five camels. On the eve of her wedding, with her mother’s tacit approval, Waris walked for a long time in the desert and sought refuge with her grandmother in Mogadishu, where she also got the opportunity to work as a maid for the aunt of the British ambassador to Somalia. Shortly after arriving in the UK, war broke out in Somalia, the old government was overthrown, and Waris seized the chaos to escape the embassy and became homeless on the streets of Britain. Waris encountered Marilyn (Sally Hawkins), who took her in, and later met a talent scout at the restaurant where she worked. Eventually, she was discovered and became a world-renowned model, dedicating herself to the women’s liberation cause. The film “Desert Flower” is based on the bestselling autobiography of Waris Dirie, a black model born in Somalia.
