During the Anti-Japanese War, soldiers of the New Fourth Army in Jiangnan engaged in intense battles against the Japanese invaders. The honorable and injured instructor Guo Jianguang (played by Tan Yuanshou) and 18 soldiers of the New Fourth Army are forced to recuperate in Sha Jia Bang, patiently awaiting the moment they can return to the battlefield. A Qing Sao (played by Hong Xuefei) and Granny Sha (played by Wan Yiying), along with other progressive villagers, actively welcome and care for the wounded soldiers, while the soldiers do their best to help with farming tasks for the villagers. The bond between the military and the civilians is deeply emotional and inseparable. Before long, the Japanese begin a sweep, and A Qing Sao leads her comrades to hide in the reeds. Frustrated by their failure, the Japanese instruct Hu ChuanKui (played by Zhou Hetong), the commander of the self-styled patriotic group colluding with the Japanese, to encircle the wounded soldiers of the New Fourth Army. Encouraged by Chief of Staff Diao Deyi (played by Ma Changli) and a Japanese translator, the covetous Hu ChuanKui heads to Sha Jia Bang... The film is adapted from the Shanghai Opera "The Fire Seed in the Reeds."
