Mitzi invites Bernadette to join him for a performance opportunity in a central Australian city, and they are accompanied by Felicia (played by Guy Pearce), who dreams of becoming the "Desert Queen" and borrows a modified bus as transportation. The three set off on a whirlwind journey, while the older Bernadette keeps her past shrouded in mystery, leading to some petty arguments with the young and restless Felicia. Mitzi occasionally reflects on his own marriage. Along the way, they showcase their flamboyance in small towns, attracting many astonished glances, but also some praise. After a breakdown, a mechanic named Bob, who cannot forget Bernadette's past performances, joins their journey. They finally reach their destination, where the audience is lukewarm, but Mitzi finally sees his son, while Bernadette decides to be with Bob…This film won the 1995 Oscar for Best Costume Design, among other accolades.
