Mary, a university professor of English literature (played by Charlotte Rampling), hides a long-sleeping, vibrant desire beneath her dignified and untouchable exterior. Her decades-long life with her husband, Jean (played by Bruno Cremer), is mundane and uneventful. This all shatters when her husband goes missing. One morning at a seaside resort, Jean leaves alone and never returns. After this, Mary seems to struggle to control her emotions; she imagines her husband still by her side, accompanying her on shopping trips, chatting, and maintaining her usual routine. Soon, a body is recovered. Mary's self-imposed numbness ends, and she begins to try to understand everything about her husband, only to discover the deep rift and alienation between them. Meanwhile, the details about Jean’s whereabouts become increasingly murky, leaving his fate in question...
