Mary, a university professor of English literature (played by Charlotte Rampling), hides a long-sleeping, vibrant desire beneath her dignified and untouchable exterior. Her decades-long life with her husband, Jean (played by Bruno Cremer), is mundane and uneventful. This all shatters when her husband goes missing. One morning at a seaside resort, Jean leaves alone and never returns. After this, Mary seems to struggle to control her emotions; she imagines her husband still by her side, accompanying her on shopping trips, chatting, and maintaining her usual routine. Soon, a body is recovered. Mary's self-imposed numbness ends, and she begins to try to understand everything about her husband, only to discover the deep rift and alienation between them.
