The story takes place in 16th century France, where the wealthy young lady Marie (played by Mélanie Thierry) falls in love with the fearsome-looking yet gentle Count de Guise (played by Gaspard Ulliel). Unfortunately, this love, which is not equal in social status, is destined for failure. Under her father's authoritarian rule, Marie ultimately marries the Prince of Montpensier (played by Grégoire Leprince-Ringuet), whom she has never even met. Shortly after their marriage, the prince is called to the front lines, entrusting Marie to Count Chabannes (played by Lambert Wilson), hoping that he can protect her from the ravages of war. In her emptiness and loneliness, Marie unexpectedly reunites with Guise, and their long-suppressed passion ignites uncontrollably. Just at this crucial moment, the prince unexpectedly returns to Marie's side, leaving her torn between two men, unsure of how to make the right choice.
