In early 20th century Sweden, society was in turmoil, and both material and spiritual lives were lacking. Maria (played by Maria Heiskanen) is an ordinary housewife managing a not-so-wealthy household. A chance win in a lottery gives her a camera, changing her life forever. She begins secretly learning photography and becomes enamored with it, capturing her children's growth and the beauty she discovers around her. Gradually, she gains the ability to take photos for her neighbors and earns some money, with them being very satisfied with the pictures. When the king visits, she is also invited to take photographs... of course, all this is kept secret from her alcoholic husband. Frequently developing photos leads Maria to become familiar with the local photo shop owner, Peterson (played by Jesper Christensen), who recognizes her talent, encourages her to continue photographing, and a subtle affection grows between them. Ultimately, their relationship is platonic, lost in time, with only the wonderful photos taken by Maria preserved till today... This film is a biography of Maria Larson, the first female photographer in Swedish history.
